Band Representation
What to do when in contact with child welfare
Under the Child, Youth, and Family Services Act – it is your inherent right to have a band representative with you from your first nation to support and advocate for you and your family.
If you have any questions or child welfare concerns, contact the band representative from Rocky Bay Child and Family Services.
What to do:
- Call your band representative and make sure they are present to ensure your understanding of the situation
- Keep track of everything that takes place between the agency worker and your family
- Read over any documentation the agency worker may have including forms and case notes before they leave your house
It is recommended that you do not sign any child welfare documents until your band representative is present. It is your right to ask the agency to wait for your band representative to attend any and all meetings with you.
Questions to ask if you have child welfare contact:
- Has my band representative been contacted for your concern/visit? If not, why?
- What is the role of the child welfare worker that is assigned to my case file?
- What are the child welfare protection concerns?
- What are the rights of my child? Who can they call?
